Spring — waking the garden up

Our spring is long, wet, and cooler than the calendar suggests. Patience with soil temperature matters more than the date on the seed packet.

Start seeds indoors early

Tomatoes and peppers go in trays by mid-February so they're ready to transplant around early-to-mid April.

Don't work wet soil

Walking on or digging soaked clay compacts it for the whole season — wait until it crumbles, not clumps.

Watch for slugs early

They're active the moment things warm up even slightly — start patrols before seedlings appear.
